In North America, First is the largest provider of student transportation carrying nearly 3 million students every day.
First is the leader in providing reliable, safe, innovative and sustainable transport services.
Although First is a global business, it aims to be local in its approach and ensures a clearer understanding of what needs to happen and a more prompt response.

-ولديها اكبر خدمه باصات في بريطانيا حيث لديها اسطول باصات يقارب عددها 9000 باص تنقل حوالي 3 ملايين راكب في اليوم لأكثر من 40 يلده ومدن رئيسيه
- كما انها توفر خدمات الشحن عبر القطارات
-وفي شمال امريكا تعتبر هذه الشركه اكبر موفر لخدمات نقل طلاب المدارس حيث تنقل حوالي 3 ملايين طالب كل يوم
-هي شركه رائده في مجالها ..موثوقه ..امنه ...مبتكره ..ومستمرة .


External influences

PESTEL stands for Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environment and Legal factors.
Business planners could concentrate on internal decisions, such as determining routes, timetables and operating buses as well as understanding what goes on outside the business.
Businesses are able to identify external changes that may affect it by carrying out a PESTEL analysis. This is a business tool in which each of the letters in PESTEL describes a type of change that takes place in the external business environment.
Many of external changes are outside the control of the company such as new government legislation.
Other changes may present a threat to the business such as a competitor using new or improved technology.
Social changes may bring opportunities, for example, migrant workers bringing new skills to the employment market.
Environmental impacts, such as those caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions or the management of waste, are of particular concern to businesses like First.
A business must assess what external changes are likely and which it needs to react to or take advantage of. Business planners can then create strategies to help the business respond effectively.
We use the term ‘business strategy’ to refer to a plan for a group of related products. First’s strategy relates to its transportation plans and takes into account all of the PESTEL factors in its environment.

-البزنس لابد ان يقيم ما هي التغييرات الخارجيه ...وما اذا كانت بحاجه الى ردة فعل اتجاهها ... او الاستفاده منها ...ومخخطوا المشاريع بعد ذلك يستطيعون رسم خطط استراتيجيه ليستجيب العمل التجاري بشكل فعال...
-مصطلح استراتيجية البزنس يعني خطه لمجموعه مترابطه من الاشياء
-استراتيجية First ترتبط بتخطيطها لوسائل النقل وتاخذ في الحسبان كل عوامل الــPESTEL في محيطها

Political Factors


In the 1980s, the government started to privatise bus services in the UK since private firms compete, keep prices low and give customers what they wanted.
A key government policy affecting all transport services relates to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The UK government has signed an international treaty – the Kyoto Protocol. Countries which sign the agreement intend to reduce the emission of harmful gases.
This can succeed only through partnership with business such as the government initiative to encourage more children to use bus services rather than travelling to school by car.
First has produced a Climate Change Strategy that shapes every action the company takes. This is part of First’s vision - to ‘Transform Travel’.
It wants to change how people feel about public transport by delivering the highest levels of service and customer satisfaction . This involves recognising its responsibility to reduce CO2 emissions to as low a level as possible.


Climate Change Strategy
Key elements of First’s Climate Change Strategy include:
Improving the fuel efficiency of its vehicles
Purchasing vehicles with greater fuel efficiency
Using alternative fuels, such as biodiesel
Operational improvements through driver training and new technology to monitor driver performance.
First aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25% for its bus division and 20% for rail, both by 2020.



في عام 1980 بدأت الحكومه البريطانيه بخصخصة خدمات النقل العام لكون الشركات الخاصه تتنافس في الاسعار والخدمات
-الرابط بين سياسة الحكومة وخدمات النقل هو تخفيض انبعاثات غاز ثاني اكسيد الكربون الضارة حيث وقعت الحكومة البريطانيه وثيقه عالميه بهذا الشأن .... وكل الدول التي وقعت هذه الوثيقه تنوي التقليل من انبعاث الغازات المضرة
-يمكن ان ينجح هذا الامر من خلال مشاركة البزنس ....مثل تشجيع الطلبه على ركوب الباصات بدلا من ذهاب كل منهم بسياره خاصه....
لدى شركة FIRST استراتيجيه لتغير المناخ تشكّل او تحدد كل قرار او فعل تتخذه الشركه... وهذا جزء من رؤية الشركة لرحلات النقل
.... فهي تريد تغيير شعور الناس نحو وسائل النقل العام عبر تقديم اعلى مستوى من الخدمات ونيل رضا الزبائن (الركاب)....كما تتضمن هذه الاستراتيجيه التركيز على خفض انبعاثات غاز ثاني اكسيد الكربون لأقل مستوى ممكن.....
هذه الاستراتيجيه لها عناصر رئيسيه ... هي ...:
1- تطوير كفاءة الوقود في مركباتها....
2-شراء مركبات بكفاءة وقود عاليه
3-استخدام وقود بديل ....مثل الوقود الاحفوري او الطبيعي ...
4-تطوير العمل من خلال تريب السائقين واسخدام تقنيات حديثة لتقييم ادائهم

تهدف First الى تقليل نسبة انبعاث غاز CO2 من وسائلها للنقل .. بنسبة 25% للباصات و22%للقطارات بحلول عام 2020

Economic Factors

It is important for businesses to respond to changes in demand from customers. e.g. First has responded to increased demand in the Neath valley in Wales to run improved services.
Market research showed that parents and students wanted safer buses, so First designed special pilot services with the student in mind, based on the lessons learned from its US operations.
Drivers are trained to work with students. Each day students step onto the same bus, can take the same seat and are looked after by the same specially trained driver. Vehicle safety features include padded seating, integrated seat belts, additional escape hatches and CCTV.
First is working with the government via a specially appointed Yellow School Bus commission to investigate the possibility of rolling out specialised yellow school bus services throughout the UK.
Another economic factor affecting First’s business is taxation. High tax on fuel encourages customers to switch from using cars to more economical bus and rail transport.
Congestion charges in cities like London also encourage drivers to switch to other forms of transport. Of course, First does not want to replace the use of cars.
First’s approach is to complement rather than compete with the car. First seeks to make it easy for people to switch between public transport and private car journeys. For example, in major cities where parking is inconvenient or expensive, First makes public transport easily available through its Park & Ride schemes.

-عامل اقتصادي اخر يؤثر على اعمال شركة FIRST الا وهو الضرائب ...فالضرائب العاليه على الوقود ...تدفع الناس لاستخدام وسائل النقل العام الجماعيه والقطارات لتوفير المال..
- الازدحام والاختناقات المروريه ايضا خصوصا في المدن الرئيسيه مثل لندن .. تدفع الناس لاستخدام الباصات ....
منهج FIRST هو الكمال ... وليس المنافسه مع السياره,,,,,,
-وهي تسعى الى تبسيط الامور لدى الناس في مسألة استخدام وسائل النقل العموميه في رحلاتهم بدلا من السيارات الخاصه
-على سبيل المثال .... في المدن الكبرى ..مواقف السيارات غير ملائمه وغالية الثمن .....
اما وسائل النقل العام فهي تتحرك وتقف بسهوله ولها مواقف خاصه ...

Social Factors

Social changes may have a major impact on business:
(1) The number of older people in the UK is rising.
There are more people with bus passes in this country than ever before. The passes mean that users travel free, as the local authority pays. First provides service.
(2) Society’s habits and tastes are changing
People are more aware of the importance of the environment and becoming ‘green consumers’. Green consumers prefer goods and services that are ‘environmentally-friendly’ and which have less impact on the environment. The green consumer prefers to travel by bus or train than by air or in a large car.
(3) People are now more mobile and travel more
Statistics produced by the Department for Transport in 2007 pick out some of the major trends. These statistics show a positive picture for First.
The market is growing and more people are realising the benefits of a more environmentally-friendly form of transport.


التغيرات الاجتماعيه لها تأثير كبير على البزنس(او العمل التجاري)

هنالك اعداد كبيره من الركاب اكثر من اي وقت مضى لديهم باقات ركوب الحافلات ...هذه البطاقات تعني ان هؤلاء امسنين يركبون الباصات ويتنقلون مجانا بهذه البطاقات.. حيث تتكفل الادارة المحليه بالدفع, شركة FIRST توفر هذه الخدمه

2- عادات واذواق المجتمع تتغير :
الناس صاروا اكثر اهتماما بالبيئه ... وباهميتها ... وهؤلاء يفضلون السلع والخدمات التي لا تؤذي البيئه ... او عالاقل تكون اقل تأثيرا على البيئه ..لذلك يفضلون التنقل عبرالباص او القطار ... بدلا من الجو (الطيران) او السيارات

3-الناس صاروا يتنقلون ويسافرون بكثره:
احصائيات ادارة النقل اظهرت صورة ابجابيه للشركه.
السوق يكبر ... واعداد الناس المهتمين بالبيئه وباستخدام وسائل نقل صديقه للبيئه... في ازدياد

Technological Factors

Businesses develop new technologies to provide the best solutions for the market place. Intelligent companies find out what the most appropriate technologies are for their businesses and use them. This is particularly true in transport.
A good example of this is in the provision of buses that lower the floor for easy entry. These provide better accessibility for disabled and elderly people. First has invested heavily to meet government targets for the provision of low-floor buses.
In 2006 First introduced ftr – this is **** shorthand for ‘Future’. These are state-of-the-art articulated vehicles that look like trams but have the flexibility of a bus and use normal roads.
First has set up schemes using these vehicles in partnership with local authorities. First provides the bus service and the local authority the infrastructure, such as new road
layouts and bus ****ters. Ftr vehicles are capable of carrying more people per journey, so fewer bus journeys are necessary. They are also more popular with customers resulting in
fewer car journeys. This reduces the amount of fuel used, reduces CO2 emissions and means less impact on the environment.

Meet the HRM officer of the company you work (in Lebanon) and answer the following questions. If you are not currently working then interview someone close to you (your father, husband, friend, etc.) and visit their employer’s HRM office and collect all necessary information/********s:

How does the organization carry out their Recruitment, Selection, and Induction/Socialization Process?


Question 2:
How might these processes have changed in the past ten years. If no change has occurred what do you recommend the company should do?


Question 3:
Why is the employment relationship important in this organization?


Write a report of up to 2,000 words for questions 1-3 as follows; Question one- 1000 words, Question two- 500 words and Question three- 500 words.

To complete this part of TMA 02, you should refer to your work for Activities 5.1 and 5.2 in Block 1; and Activity 4.2 in Block 2. These activities encouraged you to work through Sections 1-4 of the online information skills ‘course’, SAFARI.

Advice on How to Answer

Questions 1-3 draw on your work on Sections 1-4 of Block 2. You are required to choose a real company existing in Kuwait and it would be easier to choose a specific job title e.g. Marketing Manager as different job categories imply different recruiting procedures. Give a short introduction of the company and the nature of work they perform.

For Question 1, take the report from the early stages of recruitment introduced by the article on "The Public Relations Side of Recruitment and Selection" by Diane Preston, show who authorizes for the job, etc through the selection period up to the induction and socialization process. Show using evidence from the company of any of these procedures. E.g. department needs, application forms, induction scheduling, etc. These could be included in the Appendix and will not count towards the word count.

For Question 2, refer to the old deal and new deal and try and see if there has been any changes in the company's employment contract in the past 10 years that have affected the recruiting process. If no changes have been witnessed what would you recommend the company do to gain competitive advantages in future.

For Question 3, you need to apply the employment relations model and reflect the importance of this relation from both the employee and employers' point of you, in the company your writing about and more specifically in the job you have chosen.

Question 4 (the Skills question) draws on your work on Section 5 of Block 1 and Section 4 of Block 2. You need to attach at least one evidence for each skill, that is a total of four.
